Vertimowing / De-Thatching
Verti-mowing or De-Thatching (Also known as Scarifying) is the removal of the ‘thatch’ layer within the lawn profile. As the word ‘Verti’ means, ‘Vertical’ blades are used to disrupt and remove this thatch layer.
What is Thatch?
Thatch, is a layer of dead/dying stems and roots in the profile of the grass between the soil and crown of the grass blades. This layer of organic matter can build up over time, and can affect the quality and health of your lawn. Some varieties of lawn will produce more thatch than others, as well as over-watering and over-fertilising without a professional maintenance plan.
Removing the build up of thatch from your lawn will allow more light to the lawn, which willow promote healthier growth and reduce fungal issues. It will also allow water and nutrients to better enter the soil profile, making your irrigation and fertiliser applications more affective, and encourage stronger and healthier root development.
When is Vertimowing / De-Thatching done?
Dethatching lawns can be done any time through the growing season. For warm season varieties like Kikuyu, Couch, Zoysia etc. this is Spring through to Autumn. Please be aware dethatching lawns closer to Winter does run the risk of not being able to fully recover before entering into dormancy.
What is done after De-thatching?
As part of our lawn renovations, Core Aeration, Topdressing, Fertilising and Soil Amendments are done to assist with producing better quality lawns for our customers.
